Doja Cat

Doja Cat's breakthrough was a joke. In 2018 she uploaded a homemade video for a song called "Mooo!," in which she sang about being a cow while wearing a cow-print outfit in front of a green screen covered with burgers and fries. It went viral. Many people assumed she was a novelty act. Within two years she had a No. 1 single, and within five she was one of the most inventive pop stars in the world.

She was born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini on October 21, 1995, in Los Angeles. Asked in a video about her birth time, she guessed either 4:17 or 7:14 in the morning, then called her mother, who confirmed it was 7:14. Her Sun is in late Libra, with Mercury in Libra, both in the twelfth house, which astrologers link with privacy, imagination and the unconscious. Libra is the sign of aesthetics, style and visual beauty, and in the twelfth it suggests an imagination that works largely in private, surfacing in unexpected forms. Doja Cat taught herself to produce music alone, on her computer, before anyone was listening.

Her Ascendant falls in the last degree of Libra, close enough to the next sign that her rising sign depends on minutes, and Venus in Scorpio sits in the first house. Venus in Scorpio adds a magnetic, provocative, slightly dangerous edge to her self-presentation, which shows up in her outrageous fashion and visual reinventions, from appearing at the 2023 Met Gala as Karl Lagerfeld's cat, Choupette, to appearing at Paris Fashion Week covered in tens of thousands of red crystals.

Her mother, Deborah Sawyer, is a painter and architectural designer, and her father, Dumisani Dlamini, is a South African actor and composer. She spent part of her childhood living at an ashram in the Santa Monica Mountains, and she dropped out of high school to focus on music.

Her Moon is in Virgo and lands in the eleventh house, the sector tied to communities and, in modern terms, online followings. Virgo is self-critical and detail-oriented, and in the eleventh it ties emotional life to an audience. Doja Cat's relationship with her fans has been unusually volatile, playful one day and combative the next.

Mars and Jupiter both sit in Sagittarius in the second house of income and personal resources. Sagittarius is bold and expansive, and Mars and Jupiter together describe confident, risk-taking moves that bring material rewards. Her 2019 album Hot Pink produced "Say So," which reached No. 1 with a remix featuring Nicki Minaj, and Planet Her followed with "Kiss Me More," featuring SZA, which won a Grammy.

Saturn, retrograde in Pisces, lies in her fifth house of creativity. Saturn there describes creative work that demands serious effort and sometimes self-doubt. In 2023 she released Scarlet, a deliberately abrasive rap album that rejected the pop sound that had made her famous, and its lead single, "Paint the Town Red," topped the Billboard Hot 100 anyway.

The Libra Sun in the twelfth house dreams up the look in private; the Scorpio Venus makes sure the world cannot look away.
