The wound lives in the self ... in identity, the body, the basic sense of one's right to be fully present, often visible to others before it is named. It can show as a hesitation in how the person enters the world. The gift is the same place turned outward ... a presence that, having known what it is to feel unsure of its own welcome, helps others feel allowed to exist as they are.
