Zohran Mamdani

Zohran Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, the son of two people who tell stories for a living in very different ways. His mother is the filmmaker Mira Nair, who met his father while researching Mississippi Masala in Kampala in 1989. His father, Mahmood Mamdani, is an anthropologist and scholar of colonialism. The family moved to New York when Zohran was seven. Thirty-four years after his birth, he was elected the city's mayor.

His birth data is unusually well documented for a politician: 1:15 a.m. on October 18, 1991, confirmed by his mother and released through his office. That time puts his Libra Sun in the third house, together with Mercury and Mars in Scorpio. The third house is a corner of the chart astrologers associate with neighborhoods, everyday communication and getting around, and Libra is the sign of fairness and negotiation. Libra in the third suggests a person who makes his case locally and conversationally, block by block. Mercury and Mars in Scorpio add bite to that, a sharper, more persistent edge in argument.

The path ran through those neighborhoods. After studying Africana studies at Bowdoin College, Mamdani worked as a foreclosure-prevention counselor in Queens, helping homeowners at risk of losing their houses. In 2020 he defeated a five-term incumbent to represent Assembly District 36, which covers much of Astoria, and he was re-elected without opposition in 2022 and 2024. On November 4, 2025, he won the race for mayor of New York City, and he took office on January 1, 2026, becoming the city's first Muslim mayor.

His Moon is in Aquarius in the seventh house, with Saturn just inside the same sign there. Aquarius looks at systems and collective arrangements; the seventh house is about other people, partners, rivals and the public across the table. An Aquarius Moon tends to feel most settled when thinking about how things could be organized for everyone, and with Saturn nearby, that impulse comes with seriousness about rules and structure. For a politician, the seventh house is also where the opposition lives, and his career has involved plenty of it.

Leo is rising, the sign astrologers tie to visibility, warmth and a performer's ease. A Leo Ascendant tends to read as confident and expressive at first meeting, which suits a campaign that relied heavily on short videos and street-level appearances. Venus and Jupiter in Virgo in the second house add a practical, detail-minded streak around money and resources, the kind of attention that shows up in arguments about prices and housing costs.

The chart cannot say whether any particular policy will work, and voters will judge that on their own terms. What it does describe is a temperament: a negotiator who works the streets, an Aquarius Moon drawn to collective solutions, and a Leo exterior comfortable in front of a crowd. For a child of two storytellers, that is a recognizable inheritance.
