Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods was two years old when he appeared on The Mike Douglas Show in 1978 and putted against Bob Hope. His father, Earl, a retired Army officer and former Green Beret, had started training him almost as soon as he could walk, and by the time Woods reached his teens he was already the most famous amateur golfer in the world. He won three consecutive U.S. Amateur titles before turning professional in 1996.

He was born Eldrick Tont Woods on December 30, 1975, in Cypress, California, at 10:50 at night, a time recorded on his birth certificate. Capricorn holds both his Sun and Mercury, and both fall in the fourth house, where astrologers look for home, roots and the parent who shaped a child. Capricorn is the sign of discipline, patience and long-term mastery. Two Capricorn planets in the fourth describe a drive that was built at home, and Woods's career was the product of one of the most famous father-son projects in sport.

His Ascendant is Virgo, associated with precision, analysis and constant refinement. Woods was known for tearing down and rebuilding a golf swing that was already the best in the world, more than once, because he believed it could be made more exact. Virgo is never satisfied that something is finished.

In April 1997, at twenty-one, he won the Masters by twelve strokes, the youngest champion in the tournament's history at the time and the first of African American or Asian descent. His mother, Kultida, was from Thailand. In 2000 he won the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach by fifteen shots, and by April 2001 he held all four major championships at once, a feat that became known as the Tiger Slam.

Jupiter in Aries sits in his seventh house, the area of a chart associated with one-on-one encounters and, in competitive terms, opponents. Aries is combative and Jupiter enlarges, and for more than a decade Woods's opponents seemed to shrink in his presence. In 2008 he won the U.S. Open in a playoff while playing on a torn ACL and a fractured leg.

His Moon is in Sagittarius in the third house, alongside Neptune. Sagittarius seeks freedom and adventure, and Neptune blurs boundaries. In late 2009, after a car crash outside his home, revelations about his infidelity ended his marriage and halted his career. Years of back surgeries followed, and in 2017 he was arrested for driving under the influence of prescription medication, after which he sought treatment.

Then came one of the great comebacks in sport. In April 2019, at forty-three, he won the Masters again, his fifteenth major title, eleven years after his previous one. Later that year he earned his eighty-second PGA Tour win, tying Sam Snead's record, and he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

In February 2021 he was badly injured in another car crash in Los Angeles, and doctors considered amputating his right leg. He walked again and returned to play at the Masters. Patient and stubborn to the end, the Capricorn Sun keeps showing up to work.
