Susan Sarandon

Susan Sarandon has been arrested more than once for protesting. In 2018, at 71, she was among hundreds detained in a Senate office building during a demonstration against the separation of migrant families. Activism has been part of her public life for as long as acting, and she has never seemed much worried about whether it would cost her roles.

The pull toward causes is written into her chart. She was born at 2:25 p.m. on October 4, 1946, in New York City, a time rated A by Astro-Databank, and Mars and Jupiter are both in Scorpio in her ninth house, the part of the wheel linked to beliefs, principles and the wider world. Mars brings fight, Jupiter conviction, and Scorpio a fierce, all-in intensity. Astrologers would read the combination as someone who fights for what she believes and does not do it halfway.

Her Sun is in Libra in the eighth house. Libra is the sign of justice and fairness, and the eighth concerns the deep, the taboo and the transformative. A Libra Sun in the eighth suggests someone drawn to questions of justice where the stakes are high, and her best-known film fits that description exactly. In Dead Man Walking, she played Sister Helen Prejean, the nun who counsels a man on death row, and took home the Oscar for Best Actress in 1996. The film was directed by her longtime partner, Tim Robbins.

She was the eldest of nine children in a Catholic family and grew up in Edison, New Jersey. After studying drama at the Catholic University of America, she started acting in the late 1960s. The Rocky Horror Picture Show, in which she played the innocent Janet, made her a cult figure in 1975. Atlantic City brought her first Oscar nomination, and three more followed, for Thelma & Louise, Lorenzo's Oil and The Client, before she finally won for Dead Man Walking.

Capricorn is on her Ascendant, with the Moon in Capricorn in the twelfth house. Capricorn is grounded, disciplined and unsentimental, and it tends to give a cool, self-possessed public manner. The Moon in the twelfth adds a private, reserved emotional life beneath it. Sarandon's onscreen women are often tough and practical, and she has rarely played the ingenue for long.

Saturn and Pluto share Leo in her seventh house of partnership. Saturn there tends to describe long, serious relationships, and Pluto adds intensity and transformation. Her partnership with Robbins lasted more than twenty years and produced two sons and several films together before they separated in 2009.

She is still working in her late seventies, and still showing up at protests. For a Libra Sun with Mars and Jupiter in Scorpio, the two parts of her life were never really separate.
