Barack Obama

In July 2004, a little-known Illinois state senator gave the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in Boston. "There is not a liberal America and a conservative America," Barack Obama said; "there is the United States of America." The speech made him a national figure overnight. Four years later he was elected the first Black president of the United States.

He was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii, at 7:24 in the evening, the time on his birth certificate, which was released publicly in 2011 in response to false claims that he had been born abroad. His mother, Ann Dunham, was an anthropologist from Kansas, and his father, Barack Obama Sr., was a Kenyan economist who left the family when Barack was a toddler. Aquarius is his rising sign, the sign of reform, community and the ideal of a shared humanity. Aquarius rising gives a cool, rational and inclusive presence, and Obama's political message was built on unity across differences.

His Sun is in Leo, with Mercury also in Leo, both in the sixth house of work, duty and service. Leo is warm, charismatic and confident, and Mercury there describes a gift for eloquent, dramatic speech. In the sixth house, that charisma is directed toward service, and Obama spent his early career as a community organizer in Chicago before studying law.

His Moon is in Gemini in the fourth house, which concerns home, roots and family history. Gemini works through words, and in the fourth it describes someone who makes sense of his origins by writing about them. Obama spent part of his childhood in Indonesia and was largely raised by his grandparents in Honolulu, and his first book, Dreams from My Father, published in 1995, explored his mixed heritage and his search for his absent father.

Mars, Uranus and Pluto all fall in his seventh house, the area of partners and open opponents. That concentration describes intense partnerships and powerful rivals. He married Michelle Robinson, a lawyer he met at a Chicago law firm, in 1992, and she became a public figure in her own right. As president he faced fierce, sustained opposition in Congress.

Saturn, retrograde in Capricorn, and Jupiter, at the start of Aquarius, sit in his twelfth house, describing heavy burdens carried behind the scenes. Obama took office during the global financial crisis of 2008, passed the Affordable Care Act in 2010 and ordered the 2011 raid that killed Osama bin Laden. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009, early in his first term.

Neptune in Scorpio, in his ninth house of law and higher learning, describes idealism tied to education and law; he was the first Black president of the Harvard Law Review. He served two terms, leaving office in 2017, and published a presidential memoir, A Promised Land, in 2020. The Aquarius Ascendant gave him the message of unity; the Leo Sun gave him the charisma to deliver it.
