Anne Frank

German-born Jewish writer and diarist who hid in a concealed apartment above her father's office in Amsterdam with her family and four other people from July 1942 to August 1944. Arrested by the Gestapo on August 4, 1944, and deported to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where she died of typhus in February 1945, age 15. Her diary, published by her father Otto Frank in 1947, has been translated into more than 70 languages and remains among the most widely read books of the twentieth century.
