Lance Reddick

Lance Reddick trained to be a composer. He studied music at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, and he worked for years as a musician before turning to acting and earning a master's degree from the Yale School of Drama. His voice, deep, precise and controlled, became his signature as an actor, but music remained part of his life, and in 2011 he released a jazz album, Contemplations and Remembrances.

He was born on June 7, 1962, in Baltimore, Maryland. His exact birth time was never made public, so the houses in his chart are unknown, but the planets fit him well. His Sun is in Gemini, with Mercury, retrograde, also in Gemini. Gemini rules the voice, speech and communication, and Mercury there suggests a careful, deliberate relationship with words. Reddick's precise diction gave even small lines unusual authority.

His Moon falls in Leo, which carries dignity, pride and a commanding presence. A Leo Moon carries itself with gravity and self-respect, and Reddick was known for playing men of authority and composure: Lieutenant Cedric Daniels on The Wire, Phillip Broyles on Fringe, Irvin Irving on Bosch and Charon, the dignified concierge of the Continental Hotel, in the John Wick films.

Venus in Cancer describes a warm, protective heart, and those who worked with Reddick described a gentle, kind man very different from the stern officials he often played.

Mars in Taurus brings steady, patient determination. Reddick's career built slowly; he worked in theater and in small television roles, including a part in the prison drama Oz, before The Wire, which ran from 2002 to 2008, made him widely known. As Daniels, a rare honest commander inside a corrupt police department, he became one of the show's moral anchors.

Jupiter in Pisces, the sign of music and imagination, describes growth through artistic and spiritual paths. Reddick continued to compose and perform, and he also became a prominent voice actor in video games, playing Commander Zavala in the Destiny series and Sylens in the Horizon games.

Saturn, retrograde in Aquarius, suggests seriousness, discipline and a sense of responsibility, and Neptune in Scorpio adds mystery and depth, both qualities that gave his characters an air of hidden knowledge. Uranus in Leo and Pluto in Virgo belong to his generation.

Reddick died suddenly on March 17, 2023, at sixty, of heart disease, days before the release of John Wick: Chapter 4. Fans and colleagues remembered him as one of the most distinctive presences in television and film. Keanu Reeves and the director Chad Stahelski dedicated the new John Wick film to him, and players of the Destiny games gathered in the game's virtual tower to hold a memorial for the commander he had voiced for nearly a decade. The Gemini Sun gave him the voice; the Leo Moon gave him the dignity that made every character believable.
