Shaquille O'Neal

Shaquille O'Neal has a habit of paying for strangers. Stories turn up regularly of him covering someone's engagement ring at a jewelry store, buying shoes for a teenager with size 22 feet, or paying off a family's furniture bill. For a man whose public image is enormous, loud and comic, the private generosity is the part people do not always expect.

His chart explains the contrast nicely. He was born at 8:00 a.m. on March 6, 1972, in Newark, New Jersey, a time rated A by Astro-Databank. The morning hour puts his Sun in Pisces in the twelfth house, along with Mercury at the very start of Aries. Pisces is the most compassionate sign in the zodiac, and the twelfth is the hidden house, linked with private giving and things done out of view. A Pisces Sun in the twelfth describes a gentle, generous core that is not always on display.

What is on display is Aries. Aries is on his Ascendant, with Venus at the end of Aries and Mars in Taurus both in the first house. Aries is forceful and direct, Mars brings raw physical power, and Taurus adds sheer mass and stamina. As a physical presence on a basketball court, it would be hard to find a more literal description: at 7 feet 1 and well over 300 pounds, O'Neal was one of the most dominant forces the game has seen.

He was raised partly by his stepfather, Phillip Harrison, an Army sergeant, and spent part of his childhood on bases, including in Germany. At Louisiana State University he became a national star, and the Orlando Magic made him the first pick in the 1992 draft. With the Los Angeles Lakers, alongside Kobe Bryant, he won three straight championships from 2000 to 2002 and was Finals MVP each time, then won a fourth title with the Miami Heat in 2006.

His Moon is in Scorpio in the seventh house, which concerns partners and open rivals. Scorpio Moons feel deeply and hold on hard, and in the seventh that intensity goes into one-on-one relationships. His partnership with Bryant was as famous for its feuding as its success; the two eventually reconciled, and O'Neal spoke movingly about him after Bryant's death in 2020.

Jupiter in Capricorn in the ninth house, the area of education and broader horizons, adds an ambitious streak beyond sports. O'Neal released rap albums, acted in films, and in 2012 earned a doctorate in education. Since retiring he has become a fixture of basketball broadcasting, a businessman and, under the name DJ Diesel, a festival DJ.

The giant on the court and the man quietly paying a stranger's bill are the same person. The Aries rising is what the cameras saw; the twelfth-house Pisces Sun is what the stories keep revealing.
