Laverne Cox

In 2014, Laverne Cox appeared on the cover of Time magazine under the headline "The Transgender Tipping Point." That same year she became the first openly transgender person nominated for an Emmy in an acting category, for her role as Sophia Burset, an inmate in Netflix's Orange Is the New Black. For many viewers, she was the first transgender woman they had seen portrayed with depth on mainstream television.

She was born on May 29, 1972, in Mobile, Alabama, at 11:15 in the morning, a time she has given herself, which Astro-Databank rates A. She has an identical twin brother, the musician M Lamar, who played the pre-transition Sophia in flashback scenes on the show.
