José Mourinho

When José Mourinho arrived at Chelsea in 2004, fresh from winning the Champions League with Porto, he introduced himself to the English press with a line that defined him for the rest of his career: "I think I am a special one." He was arrogant, combative and brilliant, and he backed up the boast immediately, winning the Premier League in his first two seasons.

He was born on January 26, 1963, in Setúbal, Portugal, at 7:00 in the morning, a time quoted from his birth certificate. That hour puts Capricorn on the Ascendant, and just above it the chart is unusually crowded: his Sun, Moon and Saturn, all in Aquarius, sit together in the first house, the house of self and personal presence. Aquarius is independent, strategic and contrarian, a sign that enjoys defying conventional wisdom. Saturn there adds discipline and structure. With that much Aquarius in the first house, the contrarian streak is not hidden; it is the face he shows the world. It describes a tactician who thinks differently from everyone else and is willing to be unpopular, and Mourinho became famous for pragmatic, defensive game plans that frustrated critics but won trophies.

His father, Félix Mourinho, was a professional goalkeeper, and José grew up around the game. He played professionally at a modest level before turning to coaching and studying sports science.

Mercury, retrograde in Capricorn and also in the first house, close to his rising degree, describes a calculated, strategic mind and a sharp, deliberate way with words. Mourinho's press conferences became events in themselves, full of provocations, mind games and memorable lines aimed at rivals and referees.

Mars, retrograde in Leo, stands directly across the chart in the seventh house, the house of open rivals. It describes pride, combativeness and a man who defines himself against opponents, and Mourinho's feuds with Arsène Wenger, Pep Guardiola and a long line of referees were as much a part of his public life as his trophies. Leo wants to be at the center of the drama, and he often made himself the story, drawing attention away from his players and toward himself.

His coaching career began as a translator and assistant to the English manager Bobby Robson at Sporting Lisbon, Porto and Barcelona. At Porto he won the UEFA Cup in 2003 and the Champions League in 2004. At Inter Milan in 2010 he won a historic treble: the Italian league, the Italian cup and the Champions League. He went on to win La Liga with Real Madrid in 2012, a third league title with Chelsea in 2015, the Europa League with Manchester United in 2017 and the Europa Conference League with Roma in 2022.

Jupiter in Pisces describes generosity and devotion in private, and Venus in Sagittarius adds warmth and a love of freedom. Uranus and Pluto in Virgo describe meticulous, intense attention to detail, and Neptune in Scorpio, high in the tenth house, adds a public reputation for psychological games.

He has been married to Matilde, known as Tami, since 1989. In 2025 he returned home to Portugal to coach Benfica. The Aquarius planets made him a contrarian tactician; the Leo Mars made him the Special One.
