Deval Patrick

Deval Patrick grew up on the South Side of Chicago, in his grandparents' crowded apartment. His father, the saxophonist Pat Patrick, played with the jazz musician Sun Ra and left the family when Deval was young. At fourteen Patrick won a scholarship through the program A Better Chance to attend Milton Academy, a private boarding school near Boston, and the leap from the South Side to an elite New England school shaped the rest of his life.

He was born on July 31, 1956, in Chicago, at about four in the morning, which Astro-Databank gives an A rating. His Sun is in Leo, with Mercury and Pluto also in Leo, all in his second house of resources and self-worth. Leo is the sign of leadership, confidence and the public stage, and with Pluto there it gains intensity and a drive for power and transformation. A Leo cluster in the second house describes someone whose sense of worth is built through leadership and achievement, and Patrick's life has been a long climb from scarcity to influence.

Cancer is his rising sign, and Uranus in Leo sits in the first house. Cancer gives warmth and an instinct to protect, while Uranus adds an unconventional, independent streak. Patrick is known for his warm, persuasive speaking style and for presenting himself as an outsider in politics.

He went on to Harvard College and Harvard Law School. Mars in Pisces sits in his ninth house, the area of law, justice and higher principles. Mars there describes fighting for ideals, and he spent the early part of his career as a civil rights lawyer at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. In 1994 President Bill Clinton appointed him assistant attorney general for civil rights, leading the Justice Department's civil rights division.

He then moved into the corporate world, as general counsel at Texaco and later at Coca-Cola, before running for governor of Massachusetts. In 2006 he won, becoming the first Black governor of the state and only the second Black person elected governor of any American state.

His Moon is in Taurus in the eleventh house, the domain of groups, coalitions and shared hopes. A Taurus Moon is steady and loyal, and in the eleventh it finds emotional fulfillment in community and collective causes. Patrick's campaigns relied heavily on grassroots organizing.

Saturn in Scorpio, in the fifth house, describes serious responsibilities around children and creative ventures, and Jupiter in Virgo, in his third house, favors education and detailed communication. As governor he served two terms, from 2007 to 2015, focusing on education, health care and the state's economy during the financial crisis.

After leaving office he joined Bain Capital, and in late 2019 he entered the Democratic presidential primary, withdrawing after the New Hampshire primary in early 2020. The Leo planets in his second house drove him to lead; the Taurus Moon in the house of community kept him rooted in the people he came from.
