David Attenborough

In 1978, while filming Life on Earth in Rwanda, David Attenborough crouched in the undergrowth with a family of mountain gorillas. A female gorilla approached him and began grooming him, and young gorillas climbed over him as he whispered to the camera about how much humans share with these animals. The scene, broadcast in 1979, became one of the most famous moments in the history of television.

He was born on May 8, 1926, in Isleworth, west of London, and grew up in Leicester, where his father was principal of the university college. His birth time is not recorded publicly, so his Ascendant cannot be determined, but his planets fit his life remarkably well. His Sun is in Taurus, the most earthy and nature-loving sign of the zodiac. Taurus is patient, sensory and deeply connected to the physical world, and astrologers associate it with gardens, the land and the natural rhythms of life. Few people have devoted themselves more completely to the natural world than Attenborough.

Mars in Pisces, the sign of the oceans, describes energy and drive directed toward water. Some of Attenborough's most celebrated work has explored the seas, including The Blue Planet, Blue Planet II, which in 2017 helped spark a public campaign against plastic waste in the ocean, and the 2025 film Ocean.

Aries holds both Mercury and Venus, adding enthusiasm, curiosity and directness to his communication. Attenborough's narration, unhurried but filled with wonder, has introduced generations of viewers to the natural world. Aries planets also describe a pioneering spirit, and he spent much of his career doing things for the first time.

As a boy he collected fossils and specimens, and he studied natural sciences at Clare College, Cambridge. After national service in the Royal Navy, he joined the BBC in 1952, and in 1954 he presented Zoo Quest, traveling to collect animals for London Zoo.

Jupiter in Aquarius suggests success through innovation and broadcasting to large audiences. As controller of BBC Two from 1965 to 1969, Attenborough oversaw the introduction of color television in Britain and commissioned programs including Monty Python's Flying Circus and Kenneth Clark's Civilisation.

Saturn in Scorpio, retrograde, describes depth, endurance and a sober awareness of mortality and loss. In later years Attenborough's films became increasingly urgent about climate change and the destruction of habitats, and his 2020 documentary A Life on Our Planet was framed as his "witness statement." That year he joined Instagram and set a world record by reaching a million followers in under five hours.

His brother Richard, the actor and director, died in 2014. David was knighted in 1985 and has received honors from around the world. The Taurus Sun gave him a lifelong love of the earth; the Pisces Mars carried him into the oceans.
