Malcolm X

Malcolm X changed his name three times, and each name marked a different man. He was born Malcolm Little; in the Nation of Islam he took "X" to stand for the African family name that slavery had erased; and after his pilgrimage to Mecca in 1964 he became El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. Few public figures have transformed so completely, or so publicly, within a single short life.

He was born on May 19, 1925, in Omaha, Nebraska, at about 10:25 in the evening, as recorded on his birth certificate. Omaha kept Central Standard Time that spring, and read that way the record gives Capricorn rising, with Jupiter, also in Capricorn, sitting in the first house. Capricorn on the Ascendant describes a grave, self-made bearing, and the planets add two striking details. His Sun sits in the closing degrees of Taurus and his Moon in the final degree of Aries, both poised at the end of their signs, on the edge of the next. Astrologers often read late-degree placements as a sign of someone who lives on thresholds, always about to become something else, which is as close a description of his life as the chart could offer.

Taurus is the sign of conviction, endurance and immovable belief; Aries is the sign of the fighter. A Taurus Sun with an Aries Moon describes someone whose convictions are held with absolute firmness and expressed with fire, and Malcolm X's speeches carried exactly that combination of certainty and heat.

His childhood was marked by violence and loss. His father, Earl Little, a Baptist preacher and follower of Marcus Garvey, died in 1931 in a streetcar accident that the family believed was a killing by white supremacists. His mother was later committed to a mental hospital, and the children were separated into foster homes. As a young man in Boston and New York he turned to crime, and in 1946 he was sentenced to prison for burglary.

In prison he transformed himself through reading, copying out the dictionary by hand to build his vocabulary, and he joined the Nation of Islam. After his release in 1952 he became its most powerful minister and spokesman, building mosques and drawing thousands of followers with a message of Black self-respect and separation from white America.

Saturn, retrograde in Scorpio, stands near the top of his chart in the tenth house, the house of public standing, and Saturn also rules his Capricorn Ascendant. It describes discipline under pressure and authority earned the hard way. Scorpio is intense and unafraid of conflict, and the rigor he imposed on himself in prison and in the movement fits it. In 1964 he broke with the Nation of Islam, made the pilgrimage to Mecca, and returned speaking of a broader, more inclusive vision of human rights.

On February 21, 1965, he was assassinated while speaking at the Audubon Ballroom in New York. The Autobiography of Malcolm X, written with Alex Haley, was published later that year and became one of the most influential books of the century. In 2021 two men who had been convicted of his murder were exonerated. Born with his Sun and Moon on the edge of new signs, he spent his whole life crossing from one self into the next.
