Angelina Jolie

In May 2013, Angelina Jolie published an essay in The New York Times titled "My Medical Choice." She explained that she carried a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which gave her a very high risk of breast and ovarian cancer, and that she had chosen to have a preventive double mastectomy. Her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, had died of ovarian cancer in 2007. The essay led to a surge in genetic testing that researchers called "the Angelina effect."

She was born on June 4, 1975, in Los Angeles, at 9:09 in the morning, according to her birth certificate. Her Moon, Mars and Jupiter are all in Aries, in the ninth house, the area of travel, foreign lands and humanitarian ideals. Aries is bold, courageous and quick to act, and Jupiter expands its reach. A ninth-house Aries cluster describes someone driven to cross borders and to act decisively for causes abroad. In 2001 Jolie became a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations refugee agency, and she later served as its Special Envoy, traveling to refugee camps and conflict zones around the world for two decades.

Gemini holds her Sun and a retrograde Mercury, which share the eleventh house of causes and humanitarian networks. Gemini is curious and articulate, and placed there it points to a public voice devoted to collective concerns.

Venus and Saturn, both in Cancer, fall in her twelfth house, the area of hidden sorrow, hospitals and private struggles. Cancer is the sign of the mother, and Saturn there describes loss and responsibility connected to family. Jolie cared for her mother through her illness, and her own medical decisions grew directly from that experience.

Neptune, retrograde in Sagittarius, sits in her fifth house of children. Neptune is associated with compassion and with bonds that go beyond biology, and Jolie's family includes three children she adopted, Maddox, from Cambodia, Pax, from Vietnam, and Zahara, from Ethiopia, and three biological children, Shiloh and the twins Knox and Vivienne.

Her father is the actor Jon Voight, with whom she has had a long and public estrangement. She won a supporting-actress Oscar for Girl, Interrupted, starred as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, and met Brad Pitt on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. They married in 2014; she filed for divorce in 2016, and it was finalized at the end of 2024.

Uranus, retrograde in Libra, in her fourth house, describes upheavals in home and family life, and Pluto in Libra, in her third house, adds intensity to her communication. She has directed films including Unbroken and First They Killed My Father, and in 2024 she played the opera singer Maria Callas in Maria.

The Aries planets in her ninth house sent her across the world; the Cancer planets in her twelfth house carried her private grief.
