Bill Moyers

Bill Moyers was an ordained Baptist minister, a White House press secretary and one of the most respected journalists in American television, and he saw all three as versions of the same calling: helping people understand the world and their place in it. His six-part 1988 PBS series with the scholar Joseph Campbell, The Power of Myth, introduced millions of viewers to Campbell's ideas about mythology and the phrase "follow your bliss."

He was born on June 5, 1934, in Hugo, Oklahoma, at 11:15 at night, as his birth certificate records, and grew up in Marshall, Texas. Gemini, endlessly curious and talkative, holds his Sun, which sits in the fourth house, the house of roots, alongside Mars. Moyers's greatest gift was the interview: long, patient conversations with poets, scientists, theologians and ordinary people.

Mars in Gemini describes energy expressed through words and questions. Moyers started working as a reporter at sixteen for the Marshall News Messenger, and he never stopped asking questions.

Aquarius rises in his chart, and Saturn, its traditional ruler, sits in the last degrees of the same sign in the first house. A strong first-house Saturn is associated with seriousness, moral gravity and a sense of responsibility, and Moyers was known for a grave, thoughtful presence and a strong moral voice.

After studying journalism at the University of Texas, he trained at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and was ordained. He then joined Lyndon Johnson's staff, became deputy director of the Peace Corps at its founding and served as White House press secretary from 1965 to 1967. He later became publisher of Newsday on Long Island before turning to television.

Jupiter in Libra, retrograde, lies in his eighth house, with Neptune in Virgo just behind it in the seventh. The eighth house concerns life's deepest questions, including death, transformation and meaning, and Moyers made programs about faith, poetry, addiction, death and dying.

At PBS he hosted series including Bill Moyers Journal and Now with Bill Moyers, and he won more than thirty Emmy Awards. He was married to Judith Davidson Moyers, his collaborator, for more than seventy years. He died on June 26, 2025, at ninety-one.
