The Weeknd

In 2011, a mysterious singer posted a mixtape called House of Balloons online for free. There were no photos of him and almost no information, just a name, The Weeknd, and a set of dark, woozy songs about late nights and bad decisions. The anonymity was part of the appeal. A decade later, Abel Tesfaye was headlining the Super Bowl halftime show, and Billboard had named "Blinding Lights" the greatest song in the history of its Hot 100 chart.

He was born at 2:45 p.m. on February 16, 1990, in Toronto, which Astro-Databank rates A for accuracy, and his Sun sits near the end of Aquarius in the eighth house. Aquarius is independent and unconventional, and the eighth governs secrets, intensity and transformation. A Sun in the eighth suggests someone who works through mystery and reinvention, and Tesfaye built a career on a persona, keeping much of himself hidden behind the character of The Weeknd until he chose to retire it.

His Moon is in Scorpio in the fifth house, with Pluto, also in Scorpio, beside it. Scorpio is the sign of dark desire and emotional intensity, and the fifth governs romance, creativity and pleasure. A Scorpio Moon with Pluto in the fifth describes art drawn to the shadowy side of romance, and his songs are full of obsession, excess and regret delivered in a falsetto that makes them sound almost sweet.

He grew up in Scarborough, Toronto, the only child of Ethiopian immigrants, raised largely by his mother and grandmother, and he left home at seventeen. After the mixtapes he signed with a major label, and albums such as Beauty Behind the Madness, Starboy and After Hours made him one of the most streamed artists in the world.

Venus, Mars and Saturn all sit in Capricorn in the sixth house, the domain of daily work and discipline, alongside Uranus and Neptune. Capricorn is ambitious and patient, and so much of it in the sixth describes a relentless worker. Tesfaye is known for intense, meticulous attention to his records and live shows, and the stage production of his stadium tours was famously elaborate.

Cancer is on his Ascendant, a sign of sensitivity and emotional memory, and his music often returns to his past, to loneliness and to the people he hurt. In 2021, after his album After Hours received no Grammy nominations, he announced he would no longer submit his music to the Grammys.

In 2025 he released Hurry Up Tomorrow, framed as the end of The Weeknd persona. For a man whose Sun sits in the house of transformation, the character was always meant to be shed eventually.
