Tate McRae

Tate McRae was a dancer before she was a pop star. At thirteen she finished third on the American television competition So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation, and she had already won awards in competitive dance. She also posted original songs on YouTube, and in 2019 one of them, "One Day," spread online and caught the attention of record labels. Before long she was filling arenas with songs she wrote about heartbreak and insecurity.

She was born on July 1, 2003, in Calgary, Alberta. The hour of her birth has never been released, so her Ascendant is unknown; her planets, though, fit her career well. Her Sun is in Cancer, with Mercury and Saturn also in Cancer. Cancer is emotional, introspective and sensitive, and Mercury there describes a mind that turns feelings into words. McRae's songs, from "You Broke Me First" to "Greedy," deal with insecurity, jealousy and the aftermath of relationships, written with diary-like directness.

Saturn in Cancer adds seriousness and discipline to emotional life. McRae has spoken about the pressure of growing up in public and about working hard to balance her career with a normal adolescence.

Mars and Uranus, both in Pisces, describe energy expressed through music and movement. Pisces is the sign of dance, imagination and fluidity, and Mars there describes physical expression that is graceful and intuitive. McRae's live shows combine singing with demanding, sharply choreographed dancing, drawing on her years of training.

Venus in late Gemini adds charm and lyrical wit, and Jupiter in Leo describes success through performance and confidence. Leo craves the stage, and Jupiter there magnifies a performer's reach.

Her mother is a dance teacher, and McRae spent part of her early childhood in Oman before returning to Calgary. She signed with RCA Records and released her debut album, i used to think i could fly, in 2022, followed by Think Later in 2023. Its single "Greedy" became a global hit and her biggest success to that point.

In 2025 her album So Close to What reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, confirming her as one of the leading pop artists of her generation. Neptune in Aquarius and Pluto in Sagittarius belong to her generation, describing an artist who grew up online and built her following through social media.

She writes most of her own songs, often with a small group of collaborators, and she has described songwriting as a way of working through feelings she struggles to say out loud. Her concerts mix vulnerable ballads with high-energy dance numbers, a combination that reflects both sides of her training. The Cancer planets made her songs raw and emotional; the Pisces Mars made her a dancer who could carry them on stage.
