SZA

SZA's album SOS came out in December 2022 and spent ten nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Its biggest single, "Kill Bill," a calm, sweet-sounding song about murdering an ex-boyfriend, went to the top of the Hot 100. The combination is typical of her: brutally honest, darkly funny lyrics about jealousy and insecurity, sung in a voice that sounds almost serene.

She was born Solána Imani Rowe on November 8, 1989, in St. Louis, Missouri, at 12:17 in the afternoon, a time Astro-Databank rates A, and grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey. Her Sun is in Scorpio, with Mercury, Mars and Pluto also in Scorpio, all four in the ninth house, which governs belief, religion, philosophy and the search for meaning. Scorpio is the sign of raw truth, obsession and emotional honesty, and Pluto is its ruler. Four Scorpio placements in the ninth describe a person whose deepest questions are about belief and meaning, examined with total candor.

That ninth-house emphasis echoes her upbringing. She was raised by a Muslim father and a Christian mother, attended Islamic school for a time and wore a hijab as a child, until the harassment she experienced after the September 11 attacks led her to stop. Her stage name comes from the Supreme Alphabet, a system used by the Five Percent Nation.

Her Moon is in Pisces in the first house, which means her emotions are visible on the surface. Pisces is sensitive and absorbent, prone to self-doubt and longing. SZA's songs are full of vulnerability and self-criticism, and she has spoken often about anxiety and about how difficult it is for her to finish and release music.

Aquarius is her rising sign, adding a quirky, independent, slightly detached outer manner. She was a gymnast in her teens and studied marine biology at Delaware State University before dropping out to pursue music.

Saturn and Neptune, both in Capricorn, fall in her twelfth house, a placement associated with hidden fears and self-doubt worked through in private. Venus and Uranus in Capricorn sit in the eleventh house of community and audience, where unconventional relationships with fans and collaborators play out.

In 2013 she signed with Top Dawg Entertainment, the label of Kendrick Lamar. Her debut album, Ctrl, in 2017, became a touchstone for a generation of listeners with songs like "Love Galore" and "The Weekend," which explored insecurity, dating and self-worth with unusual frankness. SOS followed after long delays and became one of the most successful albums of its era, winning several Grammys.

In 2025 she joined Kendrick Lamar at the Super Bowl halftime show, and their duet "Luther" spent weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100. The Scorpio planets in the ninth house make her ask the hardest questions; the Pisces Moon makes sure she feels every answer.
