Mac Miller

Mac Miller taught himself to play piano, guitar, drums and bass as a kid in Pittsburgh, and he never stopped being a musician first and a celebrity second. Under the pseudonym Larry Fisherman he produced records for himself and other artists, and his albums grew steadily more musical and more personal over a short career. When he died in 2018, at 26, many listeners felt he had only just begun.

His mother shared his birth time publicly: 8:46 a.m. on January 19, 1992, in Pittsburgh. That morning hour places his Sun in the closing degrees of Capricorn, in the twelfth house, with Saturn in Aquarius there too. Capricorn is disciplined and hardworking, and the twelfth house is the hidden part of the chart, associated with private struggles and with what goes on away from public view. A Capricorn Sun in the twelfth describes someone whose real work and real pain both happened largely out of sight. Miller was famously diligent in the studio and open, in his lyrics, about depression and substance use.

Aquarius is on his Ascendant, giving an independent, friendly, slightly offbeat manner. Miller was known in hip-hop as an unusually generous and well-liked figure, a collaborator who seemed to know everyone and to treat them as equals.

He started young, releasing mixtapes as a teenager. In 2011 his debut album, Blue Slide Park, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the first independently distributed debut to do so in many years. The early music was light and party-minded. Later albums such as Watching Movies with the Sound Off, The Divine Feminine and Swimming moved toward jazz, funk and introspection, and Swimming earned him a Grammy nomination.

His Moon is in Cancer in the sixth house, where daily routine and health live. Cancer Moons are sensitive and need a sense of safety, and in the sixth those emotional needs are bound up with daily life and the body. Miller's later songs dealt candidly with the struggle to keep his days steady.

Mercury and Mars both sit in Capricorn in the eleventh house of friends and community, where Capricorn's ambition becomes collaborative. He worked constantly with other musicians and was widely mourned by them.

He died on September 7, 2018, of an accidental overdose. His family and collaborators completed Circles, the album he had been working on, with the producer Jon Brion, and it was released in 2020; another posthumous album, Balloonerism, followed in 2025. The diligent musician in the twelfth house left behind more finished work than anyone knew.
