Keir Starmer

Keir Starmer was named after Keir Hardie, the founder of the Labour Party. His father was a toolmaker and his mother a nurse who lived with a severe form of arthritis, Still's disease, for most of her life. Growing up in a pebble-dashed house in Oxted, Surrey, Starmer was the first in his family to go to university, and decades later he became the first Labour leader since Tony Blair to win a general election.

He was born on September 2, 1962, in London. Downing Street has never released a birth hour, so his Ascendant is unknown, but the planets describe his public character well. His Sun is in Virgo, with Uranus and Pluto also in Virgo. Virgo is methodical, careful and detail-oriented, the sign of the professional who masters a subject thoroughly. A Virgo emphasis describes someone who prefers competence to charisma, and Starmer built his reputation as a precise, cautious and forensic lawyer before becoming a politician.

Libra holds his Moon, and Mercury and Venus share the sign. Libra is the sign of law, justice, balance and fairness. A Libra Moon finds emotional security in fairness and order. Starmer studied law at the University of Leeds and Oxford and became a human rights barrister, working on death-penalty cases abroad and providing free legal help in the famous McLibel case against McDonald's.

Mars in Cancer adds a protective drive, directed toward defending others. Saturn, retrograde in Aquarius, describes a serious commitment to institutions and to public service. From 2008 to 2013, Starmer served as Director of Public Prosecutions, head of the Crown Prosecution Service for England and Wales, and he was knighted in 2014 for services to law and criminal justice.

He entered Parliament in 2015 as the member for Holborn and St Pancras. Jupiter, retrograde in Pisces, suggests growth that comes slowly and inwardly. In 2020, after Labour's heavy election defeat, he became party leader, and he spent four years moving the party toward the political center.

Neptune in Scorpio adds a private, guarded quality. Starmer is known for keeping his personal life out of public view. He married Victoria, a former solicitor who works in occupational health, in 2007, and they have two children. A lifelong Arsenal supporter, he still plays five-a-side football.

On July 5, 2024, Starmer became prime minister after Labour won a landslide victory, taking more than four hundred seats in the House of Commons. His government soon faced difficult economic choices and falling poll numbers, and critics on both left and right accused him of caution and of lacking a clear vision.

The Virgo Sun made him a methodical lawyer; the Libra Moon gave him a lifelong attachment to fairness and the rule of law.
