Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish's first hit was recorded in a bedroom. In 2015 her older brother, Finneas O'Connell, wrote a song called "Ocean Eyes" for his band, and she sang it. They uploaded it to SoundCloud so her dance teacher could choreograph to it, and it took off. She was 13. Four years later the album they made in his childhood bedroom in Los Angeles won all four of the main Grammy Awards in one night, making her the youngest artist ever to do so.

Home is unusually central in her chart, which is cast for 12:17 p.m. on December 18, 2001, in Los Angeles, a time from her birth certificate, and Jupiter, retrograde in Cancer, sits in the fourth house, the part of the wheel concerned with home, family and roots. Jupiter expands and blesses whatever it touches, and Cancer belongs to family. It is hard to imagine a more literal signature for a career built at home with a sibling: she was homeschooled, wrote and recorded with her brother in the family house, and toured with her parents.

Her Sun is in Sagittarius in the ninth house, with Venus and Pluto also in Sagittarius there. Sagittarius is the sign of big ideas, candor and the wider world, and the ninth governs belief, philosophy and long journeys. A Sagittarius Sun in the ninth suggests someone who speaks frankly about large questions, and Eilish has been outspoken about climate change, body image and mental health from her teens.

Her Moon is in Aquarius in the eleventh house of friends, groups and audiences. Aquarius is independent and unconventional, and in the eleventh it ties emotional life to community. Her relationship with her young fans has been unusually close, and her look in her early career, baggy clothes chosen partly so people would not judge her body, became a statement of independence that many fans adopted.

With Aries rising, she comes across as direct and boldly self-assured. It fits a performer who arrived with a distinctive style and little interest in fitting the usual mold of a teenage pop star. She has also spoken publicly about having Tourette syndrome.

Mercury in Capricorn occupies her tenth house, the zone of reputation, giving her public voice a disciplined, serious streak, and her songwriting with Finneas has been both prolific and honored at the highest level. Their Bond theme "No Time to Die" took the Oscar for Best Original Song, and "What Was I Made For?", written for Barbie, won it again, making her the youngest person to win two Oscars.

Her third album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, came out in 2024. The girl who sang in her brother's bedroom is now one of the most decorated musicians of her generation, and she still writes with the same collaborator, in much the same way.
