What Does It Mean When a Planet Is Retrograde?

Wednesday, March 25, 2026

Everyone knows about Mercury retrograde, but every planet except the Sun and Moon can go retrograde... and each one affects a different dimension of life. Understanding retrograde energy is one of the more nuanced skills in astrology, and it applies both to transits (what's happening in the sky now) and to your birth chart (if you were born during a retrograde).

A planet is retrograde when it appears to move backward through the zodiac from Earth's perspective. It's an optical illusion caused by orbital mechanics, but astrology treats the symbolism as meaningful... retrograde planets turn their energy inward, slow things down in their domain, and invite revision rather than initiation.

In the sky (transits), retrogrades create periods of review. Mercury retrograde reviews communication. Venus retrograde reviews relationships and values. Mars retrograde reviews how you assert yourself. Jupiter retrograde reviews your beliefs. Saturn retrograde reviews your structures and responsibilities.

The outer planets... Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto... are retrograde for about five months of every year, so their retrogrades are more of a background hum than a dramatic event. But their stations (the days they turn retrograde or direct) can be felt intensely.

In your birth chart, a retrograde planet doesn't mean something is broken... it means that planet's energy is internalized. Natal Mercury retrograde often produces deep, original thinkers who process information differently. Natal Venus retrograde may indicate someone who experiences love more internally, with a rich inner romantic life that doesn't always match their outer expression. Natal Mars retrograde can mean someone whose drive is directed inward... ambitious but not aggressive.

About 80% of people have at least one retrograde planet in their birth chart. Having several is common and simply means that more of your energy is directed inward. If you have four or more natal retrogrades, you may feel like an old soul... someone who processes life at a deeper level than the people around you.

The key insight about retrogrades... whether in transit or in your birth chart... is that they're not punishments. They're invitations to go deeper rather than faster.
