Intercepted Signs: What They Mean in Your Birth Chart

Intercepted signs occur in birth charts when a zodiac sign is completely contained within a house without ruling either cusp. In most house systems, twelve signs are distributed across twelve houses, with one sign on each house cusp. But because houses vary in size and the zodiac is divided into equal 30-degree segments, some houses end up large enough to contain an entire sign inside them. That enclosed sign is intercepted, and the sign opposite it is also intercepted in the opposing house.

The effect of interception is a kind of muffling. Planets in intercepted signs still function, but they tend to express themselves less directly, less obviously, and sometimes with more difficulty in finding appropriate outlets. A person with Venus intercepted in Scorpio may have an intense inner romantic life that doesn't fully translate into their outer relationships. Mercury intercepted in Gemini may have an exceptionally active mind that struggles to communicate what it actually processes internally.

The signs that hold the house cusps on either side of the interception are said to be duplicated... they appear on two house cusps. This means those signs express their energy quite strongly and visibly in your life, often in multiple areas simultaneously. The duplicated signs compensate for what the intercepted signs can't yet fully express.

Working with intercepted planets and signs is often a lifelong process of gradually unlocking what's been muffled. Therapy, creative expression, spiritual practice, and honest self-examination are all tools that can help intercepted placements find their voice. Not all house systems produce interceptions. Whole Sign houses, for example, assign exactly one sign per house and produce no interceptions at all.
