Finding Your Dominant Planet: The Engine of Your Chart

Every birth chart has a dominant planet... the one whose energy is most strongly expressed in your overall personality and life themes. This isn't always the planet ruling your Sun sign, and it's not determined by a single factor. It's assessed by looking at a combination of elements: which planet rules your Rising sign, which planet has the most aspects to other planets, which planet is most prominently placed (near an angle or in its home sign), and which planet rules significant stelliums in your chart.
The rising sign ruler is often the most important indicator of your dominant planet. The Ascendant's ruling planet is called the chart ruler, and it functions as the director of the entire chart... its placement by sign, house, and aspect describes how you move through the world at the most fundamental level. A Sagittarius Rising has Jupiter as the chart ruler. Where Jupiter sits and how it's aspected shapes the overall texture of this person's life experience.
A planet with many aspects to other planets is also strong, because it's actively involved in more of the chart's conversations. A Sun with four major aspects to other planets is more active and integrated than a Sun that stands mostly alone. The connected planet's themes run through multiple areas of your life simultaneously.
Planets conjunct the angles (Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant, IC) are especially prominent regardless of whether they rule the Rising sign. Angular planets are the ones whose energy is most visible and socially expressed. A person with Saturn conjunct the Ascendant carries Saturnian qualities in their presence... gravity, seriousness, and patient authority... regardless of their Sun or Moon sign.
Identifying your dominant planet helps explain why certain themes are so persistent in your life... why career is always primary (Saturn or Capricorn dominance), why relationships are the central story (Venus or Libra), why transformation and intensity keep appearing (Pluto or Scorpio). The dominant planet is the engine. Understanding it helps you understand what drives you at the level below conscious choice.
