How to Read Transits: What the Moving Planets Mean for You
By Birth Chart Library Editorial Team
What Are Planetary Transits?
Planetary transits are the ongoing movement of the planets through the zodiac as they continue their orbits around the Sun. Every day, every week, every month, the planets are somewhere in the sky — and when a moving planet reaches a position that forms a significant angle to one of your natal (birth chart) planets, it creates a transit: a temporary activation of that natal planet's themes in your current life.
Your birth chart shows where the planets were at the moment of your birth — it is a fixed snapshot of a specific sky. Transits are the living sky continuing to move after that snapshot was taken. When the two align — when the current sky makes contact with your personal birth sky — something in your life tends to respond.
How Transits Work
The essential principle of a transit is activation. When a moving planet makes a significant aspect (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, or opposition) to one of your natal planets, the archetype of the transiting planet temporarily energizes the themes of your natal planet. The transiting planet brings current, external energy; the natal planet represents an ongoing, internal structure.
For example: when transiting Mars (action, drive, potential conflict) conjuncts your natal Venus (relationships, values, beauty), you may experience a period of increased romantic energy, desire, or tension in close relationships. The conjunction brings Mars's directness and urgency into contact with Venus's relational and aesthetic domains.
The strength of a transit depends on several factors:
- The planets involved: Transits from the outer planets (Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) are typically more significant and longer-lasting than those from inner planets.
- The aspect: Conjunctions and squares tend to be the most immediately felt; trines and sextiles more flowing; oppositions more externally visible through other people.
- The natal planet's prominence: A transit to your Sun, Moon, Ascendant, or chart ruler will tend to be more personally significant than a transit to a less prominent planet.
- The orb: Transits are most strongly felt when the transiting planet is within 1-2° of exact contact with the natal planet.
The Personal Planets as Transits
Sun transits through each sign last approximately 30 days. They briefly illuminate the house they pass through, creating a month-long period of heightened awareness in that life area. When the transiting Sun returns to its natal degree — your birthday — it begins your Solar Return year.
Moon transits through each sign last approximately 2.5 days. These brief, frequent contacts create the day-to-day emotional weather — the subtle quality shifts that sensitive people notice as they change with the Moon. The monthly New Moon and Full Moon are the most widely tracked lunar transit events.
Mercury transits through each sign in 2-3 weeks, activating communication and cognitive themes in whatever house it passes through. Mercury retrograde (3-4 times per year) creates extended stays in one sign and correlates with communication disruptions and revisitation of past matters.
Venus transits through each sign in 3-4 weeks, briefly warming whatever house it passes through with ease, beauty, and relational receptivity. Venus retrograde (every 18 months) triggers a deeper reassessment of values and relationships.
Mars transits through each sign in 6-8 weeks, energizing and sometimes agitating whatever house it activates. Mars retrograde (every 2 years) often correlates with energy delays or the return of old conflicts.
The Outer Planets as Transits
The outer planets move slowly and therefore produce longer, more sustained transit periods that can reshape life structures rather than merely activating them temporarily:
Jupiter transits last about a year in each sign, with contacts to natal planets producing expansive, opportunity-rich periods. Jupiter conjunct natal Sun or Ascendant is often experienced as a time of increased confidence, opportunity, and growth.
Saturn transits last 2-3 years in each sign. Saturn transiting a natal planet subjects it to a demanding structural test. Saturn square natal Moon, for example, often corresponds with a period of emotional restriction, maturation, and the restructuring of emotional habits — difficult but productive.
Uranus transits last approximately 7 years in each sign. Uranus contacts to natal planets often correlate with sudden changes, liberations, or disruptions. Uranus opposite the natal Sun (around age 40-44) is the astrological correlate of the "midlife awakening."
Neptune transits last approximately 14 years in each sign. Neptune contacts to natal planets gradually dissolve whatever they touch — sometimes with enchantment, sometimes with confusion. Neptune conjunct natal Venus may produce a period of romantic idealism; Neptune square natal Saturn may dissolve established structures.
Pluto transits are the longest and most transformative. A Pluto transit to a personal planet or angle typically spans 3-7 years and produces fundamental, irreversible change in the area of life represented by the aspected planet.
Timing: When Do You Feel a Transit?
Transits are most strongly felt within approximately 1-2° of exact contact, but sensitized individuals may begin to notice an outer planet transit approaching months before it is exact. Because outer planets move slowly and often go retrograde, a single transit can make contact with a natal planet two or three times over a period of years — each pass revealing a different layer of the same larger process.
The first pass is often when events are initiated or awareness first dawns. The retrograde pass tends to bring an internal deepening or revisitation. The final direct pass is often when resolution or integration occurs.
How to Track Your Transits
To read your transits, you need your complete birth chart and a means of tracking the current planetary positions (ephemeris). Birth Chart Library's personalized daily horoscope and transit section, available when you create a free account, automatically calculates which planets are currently in transit to your natal planets and provides interpretations for each active transit.
The most practical approach for beginners is to track the slower-moving planets (Jupiter, Saturn, and the outer planets) rather than the inner planets, whose effects are too brief to work with meaningfully in most everyday contexts. When you notice that Saturn is transiting your 7th house for the next two years, you can work with that consciously — preparing for relationship restructuring, investing in commitment, or releasing what isn't built on a real foundation.
