Eclipse Season: What Eclipses Mean in Astrology
By Birth Chart Library Editorial Team
Eclipses are among the most powerful events in astrology. They occur in pairs (and sometimes triplets) roughly every six months, and they mark periods of accelerated change, fated events, and shifts that can feel sudden even when they've been building for a long time. If regular New and Full Moons are chapters, eclipses are plot twists.
There are two types of eclipses. A solar eclipse occurs at a New Moon when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, blocking the Sun's light. In astrology, solar eclipses represent powerful new beginnings... doors opening, paths appearing, and fresh starts that carry unusual momentum. A lunar eclipse occurs at a Full Moon when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, blocking light to the Moon. Lunar eclipses represent endings, releases, and revelations... things coming to light that were previously hidden.
Eclipses always fall near the lunar nodes... the North Node and South Node. This is what gives them their fated quality. The nodes represent your soul's growth direction (North Node) and your familiar patterns (South Node). Eclipses on or near your natal nodes tend to produce events that feel destined... the kind of changes that redirect your life in ways you couldn't have planned.
Eclipse seasons activate specific houses in your chart depending on which signs they fall in. If eclipses are happening in Aries and Libra, they're activating the houses in your chart ruled by those signs. Check where Aries and Libra fall in your chart to see which life areas are being stirred up during that eclipse season.
The effects of an eclipse aren't always felt on the day itself. Many astrologers observe that eclipse themes unfold over a window of about a month before and after the actual date. Events that seem to come out of nowhere during eclipse season have usually been brewing beneath the surface... the eclipse just brings them to a head.
The most important guideline for eclipse season is to pay attention. Notice what's ending, what's beginning, what's being revealed. Eclipses don't respond well to force... they have their own agenda. The changes they bring are rarely the ones you'd choose, but they're often the ones you need. Trust the process, even when it feels like the ground is shifting beneath you.
