Tom Cruise

In 2011, for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Tom Cruise climbed the outside of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the tallest building in the world, attached by cables hundreds of meters above the ground. Over the following decade he hung from the side of a flying cargo plane, learned to fly helicopters for stunts and drove a motorcycle off a Norwegian cliff before parachuting to the ground. For Cruise, doing his own stunts became a central part of his identity as a movie star.

He was born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV on July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, New York, at 3:06 p.m., per his birth certificate. Cancer holds his Sun, which shares the ninth house of travel and adventure with his Moon, newly arrived in Leo. Cancer is driven and protective, and the ninth house loves exploration. His films have taken him around the world, often to shoot extraordinary action sequences in remote locations.

Venus and Uranus, both in Leo, occupy his tenth house, the sector of public image, along with Pluto in Virgo. Leo craves stardom, and Venus there describes charm and magnetism in public life. Uranus adds sudden, explosive success, and Pluto adds intensity and power. Cruise was a global film star by his early twenties, with Risky Business in 1983 and Top Gun in 1986.

Scorpio is his rising sign, with Neptune, retrograde in Scorpio, in the first house. Scorpio gives intensity and a guarded, private presence, and Neptune adds mystery. Cruise has kept much of his private life out of view, and his long involvement with the Church of Scientology has been the subject of intense public scrutiny.

He grew up moving frequently with his family, struggled with dyslexia and briefly attended a Franciscan seminary as a teenager. He has described his father as abusive.

Mars in Taurus, in his seventh house of partnership, describes determined, physical energy in relationships. He has been married three times, to the actresses Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes.

Mercury in Gemini, in his eighth house, describes a quick mind applied to risk and transformation, and Saturn, retrograde in Aquarius, in his fourth house, suggests responsibility and discipline rooted in a difficult childhood. Jupiter, retrograde in Pisces, lies in his fifth house, tied to play and risk.

He earned Academy Award nominations for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia. In 2022 Top Gun: Maverick earned more than a billion dollars worldwide, and in 2025 the Academy announced that he would receive an honorary Oscar. The Cancer Sun in his ninth house sent him around the world; the Leo planets near the top of the chart made him a star.
