Nicki Minaj

In 2010, Nicki Minaj recorded a verse on Kanye West's song "Monster," alongside Jay-Z and Rick Ross. Hers was the last verse and the longest, switching voices, accents and personas at high speed, and many listeners agreed she had outperformed everyone else on the track. Later that year her debut album, Pink Friday, went to No. 1, and she became the most commercially successful female rapper of her generation.

She was born Onika Tanya Maraj on December 8, 1982, in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, and moved to Queens, New York, at five. No birth time for her has been published, so her Ascendant is unknown, but her planets suit her closely. Sagittarius holds her Sun, joined there by Mercury and Venus. Sagittarius is bold, theatrical, outspoken and larger than life. A Sagittarius cluster describes a performer who loves exaggeration, humor and spectacle, and Minaj's style, with its wild wigs, cartoonish costumes and rapid shifts of voice, is pure excess.

Neptune is also in Sagittarius, adding a gift for illusion, fantasy and multiple identities. Neptune is the planet of masks and characters, and Minaj has built her career on alter egos, from the British-accented Roman Zolanski to the Harajuku Barbie persona that gave her fans their name, the Barbz.

Jupiter in Scorpio describes intensity, ambition and a competitive edge. Minaj is known for fierce rivalries and an unyielding defense of her status in hip-hop.

Mars, in the late degrees of Capricorn, describes disciplined ambition and a strategic approach to career. Minaj studied acting at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York, worked in restaurants and released mixtapes before Lil Wayne signed her to Young Money in 2009.

She has had a long string of hits, from "Super Bass" and "Starships" to "Anaconda," and has placed more songs on the Billboard Hot 100 than any other female rapper. Uranus in Sagittarius adds unpredictability and a willingness to break genre rules, and her music moves freely between hard rap, pop and dance.

Saturn at the very start of Scorpio and Pluto in late Libra describe serious, sometimes turbulent experiences in relationships and power. She married Kenneth Petty in 2019, and their son was born in 2020. Her 2023 album, Pink Friday 2, debuted at No. 1, more than a decade after the first.

Her fans, the Barbz, are among the most devoted in music, and she has used social media to speak to them directly for more than a decade. She has also been a mentor and collaborator to younger female rappers, and her influence can be heard across a generation of artists who followed her into the mainstream. The Sagittarius planets gave her the boldness and humor; the Neptune among them gave her a gallery of characters to play.
