Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris has often repeated a question her mother used to ask: "You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?" The point, Shyamala Gopalan meant, was that nobody exists in isolation, that everyone comes out of a family, a community and a history. Gopalan, a breast cancer researcher who had come from India to study at Berkeley, raised Kamala and her sister largely on her own after separating from their father, Donald Harris, a Jamaican-born economist.

Harris was born at 9:28 in the evening on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, according to her birth certificate, and her chart is built around a Full Moon. The Sun sits in late Libra and the Moon in late Aries, almost exactly opposite one another, at nearly the same degree. Libra is the sign of law, justice, diplomacy and balance; Aries is the sign of the fighter. A Full Moon between them describes a person pulled between two instincts, the impulse to seek consensus and the impulse to prosecute, and Harris's career has largely been spent as a prosecutor and then a politician trying to hold both.

In 2003 she was elected district attorney of San Francisco; in 2010 she narrowly won the race for attorney general of California, and in 2016 she was elected to the United States Senate.

Gemini is her rising sign, describing a quick, verbal, debate-ready manner. Harris became known in the Senate for sharp questioning at confirmation hearings, a prosecutor's style transplanted to Capitol Hill. Mars in Leo, in her third house, adds a theatrical, confident edge to how she argues.

Saturn, retrograde at the end of Aquarius, lies in her ninth house, the area of law, higher principles and the wider world. Saturn there points to a serious, long effort to build authority in legal and governmental institutions.

In 2020 Joe Biden chose her as his running mate, and in January 2021 she became the first woman, the first Black American and the first South Asian American to serve as vice president of the United States. In July 2024, after Biden withdrew from the presidential race, she became the Democratic nominee, running a campaign of just over a hundred days. She lost the election to Donald Trump that November, and in 2025 she published 107 Days, her account of that campaign.
