Judy Garland

Judy Garland made her stage debut at two and a half, singing "Jingle Bells" at her parents' movie theater in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Born Frances Ethel Gumm, she toured the vaudeville circuit with her older sisters as the Gumm Sisters, and at thirteen she was signed by MGM. By sixteen she was Dorothy Gale, singing "Over the Rainbow" in The Wizard of Oz, the song that would follow her for the rest of her life.

She was born on June 10, 1922. Her birth time is not on record, so her Ascendant remains unknown, but her planets tell a vivid story. Her Sun is in Gemini, the sign of versatility, quick wit and communication. Gemini performers often move effortlessly between singing, dancing, comedy and drama, and Garland could do all of it, with a lightning-fast comic touch that audiences sometimes overlooked because her voice was so overwhelming.

Venus and Pluto are both in Cancer, the sign of home, longing and emotional memory. Venus in Cancer is sentimental and tender, and Pluto adds depth and intensity. Garland's greatest songs, from "Over the Rainbow" to "The Trolley Song" and "The Man That Got Away," are about longing, home and heartbreak, sung with a raw emotional power that few singers have matched.

Neptune in Leo describes glamour and illusion on the stage, as well as the danger of losing oneself in an image. MGM controlled nearly every part of Garland's life as a teenager, including her weight and her schedule, and studio staff gave her pills to suppress her appetite and keep her working long hours, followed by sleeping pills at night. The dependence on drugs that began there troubled her for the rest of her life.

Mars, retrograde in Sagittarius, suggests restless energy that turns inward and is hard to direct. Garland's career had extraordinary highs and painful lows. She starred in Meet Me in St. Louis in 1944, directed by Vincente Minnelli, whom she married; their daughter, Liza Minnelli, also became a star. MGM fired her in 1950, and she rebuilt her career on the concert stage.

Jupiter and Saturn, both in Libra, describe partnerships that bring both opportunity and burden. Garland married five times, and her finances were often in chaos. Uranus in Pisces adds sudden, unpredictable change and a sensitivity to escape.

Her comeback was triumphant. She earned an Academy Award nomination for A Star Is Born in 1954, and her 1961 live album, Judy at Carnegie Hall, won the Grammy for Album of the Year, the first time a woman had won the award.

She died in London on June 22, 1969, at forty-seven, of an accidental overdose of barbiturates. She remains an icon, especially for gay audiences, who embraced her vulnerability and resilience. The Gemini Sun gave her the versatility; the Cancer Venus gave every song its ache.
