Austin Butler

Austin Butler spent roughly two years becoming Elvis Presley. He studied footage frame by frame, worked with vocal and movement coaches, and lived so completely inside the role that his speaking voice still sounded like Elvis long after Baz Luhrmann's film wrapped. The day after shooting ended, he was hospitalized with a virus that mimicked appendicitis, his body finally letting go of the role. The performance earned him a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and an Academy Award nomination.

He was born at 11:47 at night on August 17, 1991, in Anaheim, California; the time comes from his birth certificate. The Sun is in Leo, and Jupiter sits less than one degree away, also in Leo. A Sun-Jupiter conjunction in the sign of the performer is about as theatrical as a chart gets: Leo wants an audience, and Jupiter magnifies everything it touches. It is hard to think of a more fitting role for that combination than the King of Rock and Roll.

Both planets fall in his fourth house, which astrologers read for home, family and the parent who did the nurturing. Butler's mother, Lori, encouraged his acting from childhood, home-schooling him so he could take roles. She died of colon cancer in 2014, when he was twenty-three, the same age Elvis was when he lost his mother, Gladys. Butler has said that parallel was the emotional key to the performance.

Mercury and Venus are also in the fourth house, both retrograde in Virgo, a placement associated with careful, inward-looking analysis. Mars in Virgo falls in the fifth house of performance and creative play. Virgo is the sign of craft, and Mars there describes energy poured into technical preparation. Butler is known for meticulous research, from Presley's vocal inflections to the bodybuilding and physical menace he brought to Feyd-Rautha in Dune: Part Two.

Taurus is his rising sign, which gives a calm, steady presence and, in astrological tradition, a connection to the voice. Butler's lowered, slow-spoken delivery has become something of a trademark.

He was spotted by a talent manager at the Orange County Fair at thirteen and spent his teens in television, on Zoey 101, Switched at Birth and The Carrie Diaries. The leap came on Broadway, where he played opposite Denzel Washington in The Iceman Cometh in 2018, and Washington reportedly recommended him to Luhrmann. Quentin Tarantino cast him as Charles "Tex" Watson in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

His Moon is in Sagittarius in the seventh house, a placement of openness to others and a restless appetite for new experiences, and since Elvis he has moved between very different worlds: the World War II airmen of Masters of the Air, the motorcycle gangs of The Bikeriders and the New York underworld of Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing.

The Leo in him wanted the stage, and the Virgo planets did the homework. Between them, they produced one of the most complete transformations in recent film.
