Ana de Armas

When Ana de Armas arrived in Los Angeles in 2014, she spoke almost no English. She had been a successful actress in Cuba and then in Spain, but in Hollywood she started from scratch, learning lines phonetically at first and taking intensive English lessons. Before long she was starring in Knives Out and playing a Bond girl, and in 2023 she became the first Cuban-born actress to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.

She was born on April 30, 1988, in Havana, and grew up in Santa Cruz del Norte, a small town east of the capital. No birth time has been published, so her Ascendant and houses are unknown, but her planets are telling. Her Sun is in Taurus, with Mercury and Jupiter also in Taurus. Taurus is grounded, patient and sensual, a placement associated with beauty and quiet determination. Jupiter there expands those qualities, describing growth that comes through steady, persistent effort.

Venus in Gemini adds curiosity, charm and a facility with language and change. De Armas has reinvented herself in three countries and two languages, adapting to each new industry.

Her Mars sits in Aquarius, a restless, rule-breaking placement. Aquarius likes to break from expectations, and de Armas left Cuba at eighteen for Spain, where she became famous on the teen drama El Internado, and then left Spanish stardom behind to start over in Hollywood.

Saturn, Uranus and Neptune in Capricorn, which belong to her generation, describe ambition and a willingness to work through hardship. She studied at Cuba's National Theatre School from fourteen and made her film debut at sixteen in Una rosa de Francia.

Her Hollywood breakthrough came with Blade Runner 2049, in which she played Joi, a holographic companion, and then Rian Johnson's Knives Out, in which she played Marta, a nurse caught up in a murder mystery, earning a Golden Globe nomination. She appeared as the CIA agent Paloma in No Time to Die, a brief role that many viewers called the film's highlight.

Pluto in Scorpio, retrograde, adds intensity and a capacity for transformation. In 2022 she played Marilyn Monroe in Andrew Dominik's Blonde, a dark, controversial portrait of the star's life. Her performance earned the Oscar nomination, though the film itself divided critics.

In 2025 she starred in Ballerina, an action film from the John Wick series, performing many of her own stunts after months of training in martial arts and weapons handling. She has spoken about how much she enjoys physically demanding roles, and about the discipline she learned at Cuba's theater school, where students rehearsed for long hours with few resources. The Taurus Sun gave her patience and resilience; the Gemini Venus gave her the adaptability to succeed in a third country and a second language.
